Santa Inés Ahuatempan, Puebla, México

2013

Information

In 2013 we worked with the indigenous community N’giba (Popoloca) at Santa Inés Ahuatempan within the region of Puebla (Mexico). In the community many people are forced to seek work in the US because of the difficult conditions in the area; some of them, who have returned have told us about their experience as immigrants. We talked about USA, Mexico, being illegal, their effort, money, horizons, highways, tortillas, loneliness, illusions. We decided to work with them on the issue of emigration, which we approach in terms of their cultural and personal ideas of relocation. Therefore we recovered a local tradition, currently almost lost, that we recreated collectively: Moving a house. We loaded onto our shoulders, and moved a palm house. This effort, usually accomplished with practical purposes, in this case served to transport it to the main square of the city with the sole aim of dismantling it, declaring indirectly the disintegration of a certain type of society because of the cultural influences of western society. We therefore decided to transform the house into a monument representative of the image of USA, which most of the people in town have never actually seen, nor have they been there. We asked children and teenagers to draw the Statue of Liberty, an image seen hundreds of times through television, comic books, newspapers, postcards. Adults have then voted and chose the best. With the help of the community (especially the artisans who work the palm) we dismantled the house and reused the materials to create a large-scale reproduction of the most voted drawing and installed it on the square.
